FIRESTATION PRINT STUDIO

Opening doors to the community

Established in 1992, the Firestation Print Studio is a not-for-profit organisation that offers gallery and workshop space, artists' studios, a photographic darkroom, traditional intaglio printmaking classes (including etching, sugar-lift, use of soft ground, hard ground, aquatint, dry-point, multi-plate printing and other printmaking techniques; (mono-print with oils, lino-cuts, wood cuts including a Japanese technique, Mocovito), supervised access, one-to-one tuition and membership benefits.

We offer 24 hour access to the workshop for professional artists and a diverse range of introductory and related classes for the wider community to experience printmaking techniques first hand.

New developments include;

  • A letter press, book binding, paper making classes and facilities for limited edition books, scrap books, projects requiring combined illustration and text.
  • A renovated community room with custom made workbenches, a large table and sink that can be hired for classes or meetings by external groups or members for art related activities at the discretion of Firestation Print Studio management.

New non-toxic printmaking master classes are being held 2007 / 08. These include;

  • Gravure Sur La Carton technique which combines collagraph and multi-plate mono printing amongst other techniques. Oil paints are used on plexi-glass and cleaned with vegetable oil creating the opportunity to make painterly prints by a Tamarind trained Master Printer with international experience running and teaching in a major New York Printmaking studio and other print studios throughout the US and Canada
  • Wood cuts, including Japanese Mocovito printing on wood.
  • Prontoplate techniques using polymer plates.
  • Solar printing combined with specialist darkroom facilities including an enlarger that projects large images onto the wall (set for 1.5 x 1 meter high with greater applications).
